COMMON FOOT CONDITIONS

  • I HAVE CALLUSES, CAN I CUT THEM OFF?

Calluses & corns are spots of thick, hard skin that grow due to pressure on your feet. They are normal & are usually caused by ill-fitting shoes. You don’t need to treat them unless they case you pain.

Never cut off calluses on your own. This could lead to an infection which is especially dangerous if you have diabetes. A few remedies for calluses include:

    • Soaking your feet in warm water & wearing off dead skin with a pumice stone
    • Use custom orthotic inserts
    • Wear better-fitting shoes to reduce pressure on feet
  • HOW DO YOU AVOID INGROWN TOENAILS?

Make sure you always cut your toenails in a straight line. Do not cut down the sides of the nail. You can instead lightly round the edges of your nails using a nail file. Soften rough skin around the nails by soaking your feet, using a pumice stone, & applying moisturizer.

  • WHAT ARE BUNIONS & HOW DO YOU TREAT THEM?

Bunions are bony bumps found on the joints of your big toe or pinkie toe. They indicate misalignment of the toe & can be caused by genetics or the shoes you wear.

  • HOW CAN I DISTINGUISH A BROKEN ANKLE FROM A SPRAINED ONE?

It’s challenging to differentiate between a severely sprained ankle & a broken one. You will need a podiatrist to review an X-ray of your ankle to determine the injury. Call our clinic at 702-384-2544 to schedule your appointment.

  • WHAT CAUSES PLANTAR FASCIITIS?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, the band of tissue supporting your arches. It is the most common cause of heel pain, & is caused by a variety of situations, including:

    • Flat feet
    • High arches
    • Rolling your feet inward while you walk
    • Standing or walking on a hard surface for extended periods of time
    • Being obese

CUSTOM ORTHOTICS

  • WHAT IS AN ORTHOTIC?

Orthotics are firm or soft inserts that replace your shoe’s insole. They support your feet & ankles, improve their function, & reduce the likelihood of foot conditions. Consult with our staff about custom-made orthotics that are tailed for your feet & your specific condition.

  • HOW OFTEN DO I REPLACE MY ORTHOTICS?

Orthotic inserts don’t last forever & can lose effectiveness when they lose their shape & contour. Lifespan depends on the type of orthotic & how active you are. Custom orthotic inserts typically last longer than over-the-counter options, between three to five years.

  • WHEN DO I REPLACE MY SHOES?

Typically, running & walking shoes last for 350 – 500 miles. Depending on your level of activity, this can be between six – twelve months. But this isn’t a hard and fast guide; you should also consider:

    • How much cushioning & support your shoes provide – has it reduced?
    • Condition of your insole
    • Visible signs of wear on the soles
    • Any pain your shoes cause
